Missing Summer Camp? How to Deal With It

Summer camp alumni will be quick to tell you that most campers spend their time away from their cabins counting down the days until the next season. While you can’t magically get someone to open wide the gates to camp, there are some things you can do to make the time pass faster. When you find yourself with a case of camp sickness, use these ideas to recreate that cozy camp feeling.

Chat Up a Camp Friend

Technology may be a no-no when camp is in session, but calling or texting an old camp friend is a great way to stay connected now that you’re home. Scrounge up that number that they scrawled on the back of your camp shirt, and give them a call. Spending a few minutes giggling about your favorite camp memories will remind you that the friendships you make at camp really do last forever.

Try a Recipe from the Camp Cookbook

There is nothing like the taste of camp food to transport you back to the dining hall or the campfire. Grab some graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows and make s’mores in the oven. Or, getting very serious, you may want to bake a batch of monkey bread to share with your family and friends at home.

Revisit Your Favorite Photos

Looking at pictures is a great way to indulge your nostalgia. Visit your summer camp’s online photo journal to rediscover all those special moments that you miss, or pull out your scrapbook and flip through the pages. Seeing yourself executing a perfect flip on the trampoline or taking a pottery class with your best friend will bring an instant smile to your face.

Get Involved with a Camp Craft

Summer camp crafts range from simple friendship bracelets to complicated sculptures and paintings. Think about a few of your favorite activities at camp, and then find a way to recreate them. For example, you could tie-dye some bed sheets, or you could take a canvas outside and paint the landscape. Whatever activity you choose, you will enjoy the same level of relaxation that makes camp so special.

Practice Your New Skills

Get ready for your next summer at camp by practicing the skills you have learned in the past. Many outdoor sports can be practiced indoors by using a foam ball or balloon, or you can take a class at school to refine your gymnastics or drama skills. Knowing that you will return to camp with your skills still intact will get you excited about advancing to the next level in your favorite activities.

Recreate the Camp Experience

Being outside is a huge part of the allure of camp, and many of your favorite activities can be recreated at home. Grab a tent and invite your best friend over for a backyard campout. Since a campfire is likely not a good idea in most neighborhoods, use a flashlight to make a pretend one. Then, break out your best campfire stories and songs while enjoying an evening that feels almost like your summer camp experience.

Missing camp is pretty normal after a summer full of fun. Yet, each day truly does fly by when you stay focused on continuing to build upon what you have learned. While nothing can truly replace the full experience of camp, you can stay connected and keep your spirits up by staying busy with fun camp activities.
